Il pomeriggio del 9 luglio 1943 due flotte aeree, composte dai velivoli angloamericani da trasporto, erano pronte al decollo dalle piste tunisine con obiettivo Sicilia. Lo sbarco alleato sarebbe stato preceduto da un diffuso lancio di paracadutisti della 82a divisione aviotrasportata americana nel settore di Gela e di aliantisti della I brigata britannica nel settore di Siracusa.
On the afternoon of the 9th of July 1943 two air fleets, made up of British and American, were ready to take off from the Tunisian runways having as objective Sicily. The allied landing would have been preceded by a vast launch of paratroopers of the 82nd American Airborne Division in the area of Gela and of glidermen of the British Brigade in the area of Syracuse.
